where my name came from – jolene
At work my colleagues have been playing over and over the song ‘Jolene‘. It’s a great song and they also do it as a laugh cause that’s my name – but spelt differently – Joelyne.
I must say that I really do like my name. I’ve always been proud of it, cause here in Sydney it’s so unique!!! (not sure about the name popularity in America where it originated from).
My parents got the name from Olivia Newton-John’s song ‘Jolene.’ I haven’t actually heard that version yet, but I have heard the version by Dolly Parton, who it was written and performed by.
I’ve always wondered how it originated and came across this from babynames.com:
The meaning of the name Jolene is a Combination Of Jo And Eileen. The origin of the name Jolene is American.
And this from babynameaddicts.com
Jolene Increasing Torch Modern English
From Jo, meaning God Will Increase Old English
From Lena, meaning Torch Scandinavian
Quite interesting!
Do you like your name? Does it have a meaning? And where did it originate???

>what a great story! …when I was younger I thought my name was boring …I wanted something more exotic …but I suppose I don’t care much anymore. …oh, it means Strong or Able …hilarious
>lovely story! i dont particularly like my name though… my parents were going to call me Gary if I was a boy… but I turned out to be a girl instead so Geri it was!

>My first name is Brianne. My parents heard my name on the show Star Search. I didn’t like it when I was little, but I guess it is starting to grow on me now. I think it is Gaelic in origin.
I feel like your name would be more popular in the Southern US States than in the North. I have never met a Jolene before
>I actually know this song.
haha lovely name.
>What a fabulous collage and history!!
My full name is Catherine but I go by a nickname, Carrie, which was my paternal great-grandmother’s name

>i love my name, even though it’s not that original. according to babynameaddicts.com, it originated from ash tree meadows.
interesting!
>Yes great post/story. Names are important. My birth name isnt Ms. Butterfly lol. It’s Chadina and my mom told me an interesting story. She says when she was pregnant with me she had a dream they issued her two passports, when she asked who the 2nd was for they said ‘Your daughter’ when she opened it the name ‘Chadina Maria’ was written inside. After she gave birth, and was dissappointed to have a girl NOT A BOY she deceided to name me that based on the truth of the dream. The first four letters CHAD means warrior. I find that very interesting.
Jolene is a beautiful name!
>the ray lamontagne one? i love that song!

>I used to really dislike my name because everyone called me Winnie the Pooh when I was growing up. I’ve grown to love my name though because everyone remembers it!
>thanks for your comment! i love the collages =]

>I like my names.
Judith—a biblical name. (catholic bible to be specific) means queen of the jews or a jewish lad or sumtn in that respect.
My other name is Adaobi pronounced Adobe. it is actually 2 names in one.
Ada (which is how my family adresses me most of the time)- means first daughter.
Obi-means a palace/kingdom.
So together, it means first daughter of a palace/kingdom. Neat huh??
>great story i love your name <3 how do you pronounce it ? Actually i quite like my name (laurianne) because it's not common and because it's pure and innocent like a child .

>Jolene is a very pretty name.
My parents chose my name b/c they thought it sounded nice. In Hebrew it means “ensnarer of men.”
>I love my name :]
Although I can not find it spelled Courtenay on those sites.
My name came from the city that my mom lived in as a child. Hehe, dorky.
The meaning of the name Courtney is A French Dynasty Name. How lovely!
>i think i like my name most because it is somewhat unisex…not too feminine.
>It’s a really interesting name. I wish my name had such a cool backstory, but it doesn’t as far as I know. I think “Amelia” means hard-working. I like it pretty well.
>I didn’t know ONJ sang Jolene originally, but Dolly Parton – what an unlikely legend! I’d love to be named after one of her songs!

>I like my name OK, but I hate hearing parents screaming it at their 8-year-olds in Barnes and Noble. I LOVE Dolly Parton though – completely genuinely. Last weekend I was on a school trip to Myrtle Beach, and I kept seeing posters of her and getting disproportionately excited. Jolene is def one of her best.

>I dig the name Jolene. Never met anyone by that name, but I adore the Dolly Parton song, not to mention the White Stripes’ cover of it!
I like my name too, Laurieanne! And it’s funny because I’ve never met anyone with my name before… until I was reading through your comments and saw that Mash shares it, just with a slightly different spelling!
Mash… je m’appelle aussi Laurieanne! Super!
>Well…I was named after time of birth. Obviously not born in the morning…!
I love that song, very catchy and now I'm going to be singing it all night! I know this is simply redundant but…you definitely suit your name.
[I'm just curious...are you a journalist?]
